About this manual

This self-paced training manual is designed for substance abuse counselors and case workers interested in node-link mapping, a visual representation technique for helping clients improve problem-solving and decision making skills. A step-by-step format is used to explain both the theory and application of node-link mapping for both individual and group counseling. Studies by the authors suggest that incorporation of node-link mapping in counseling enhances client commitment to treatment, counseling efficiency, and therapeutic alliance. This "how to" manual also includes:

  • Review of cognitive learning theory
  • Glossary of node-link mapping terms
  • Exercises for practice and mastery
  • Ideas for using mapping in counseling sessions
  • Examples of finished maps
  • Bibliography of papers on node-link mapping

This manual was developed as part of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Grant DA08608, Cognitive Enhancements for the Treatment of Probationers (CETOP).
