Bahr, G. S., & Dansereau, D. F. (2005). Bilingual knowledge maps (BiK-Maps) as a presentation format: Delayed recall and training effects. Journal of Experimental Education, 73(2), 101-118. Abstract: The use of bilingual knowledge maps (BiK maps) for presenting foreign language vocabulary was explored. Participants were assigned to 1 of 4 conditions for the task of studying 32 German-English word pairs. Participants were trained on either lists or BiK maps and studied either lists or BiK maps. BiK-map participants showed greater recall than list students and reported greater use of breadth-based recall strategies. BiK-trained students expressed less intent to engage in rote learning when studying vocabulary in the future and greater intent to use theme-centered and image processing during general textbook study. Czuchry, M., & Dansereau, D. F. (2005). Using motivational activities to facilitate treatment involvement and reduce risk. Journal of Psychoactive Drugs, 37(1), 7-13. Abstract: The effectiveness of intervention modules designed to enhance motivation and readiness for treatment was examined in a sample of 146 probationers remanded to substance abuse treatment. Subjects were randomly assigned to receive either standard treatment or standard treatment enhanced with the motivational modules. Results found that probationers who received the enhanced interventions reported they were more motivated to be involved in treatment and to reduce risky behaviors (drinking, drug use, sexual activity) at the end of the residential phase of treatment. The utility of adding “booster” sessions as a way of improving the intervention also is discussed. Dansereau, D. F. (2005). Node-link mapping principles for visualizing knowledge and information. In S.O. Tergan & T. Keller (Eds.). Knowledge visualization and information visualization -- Searching for synergies. Lecture Notes in Computer Science 3426, 61-81. Heidelberg: Springer-Verlag. Abstract: The Texas Christian University Node-Link Mapping (TCU-NLM) system is described. It consists of information, guide, and free-style maps, and has been explored in the areas of education, counseling, and business. Principles derived from research and application experiences with this system since 1972 are presented in four categories: goal specification, node-link infrastructure, spatial organization, and map processing. Implications of these principles for both knowledge and information visualization are discussed. Flynn, P. M. (2005). Issues in the assessment of personality disorders and substance abusers with the MCMI. In R. J. Craig (Ed.), New directions in interpreting the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory III. New York: John Wiley & Sons. Summary: The original, introduced in the 1970s, and all subsequent versions of the MCMI have been routinely used as diagnostic and screening tools with substance-abusing populations. This chapter describes current and ongoing issues in the use of the MCMI with substance abusers and offers suggestions for interpreting unclear, conflicting, or ambiguous patient profiles among problem substance users. Issues include categorical classifications and the use of prototypical (i.e., face-valid) items, cut-off scores, and diagnostic recommendations. MCMI operating characteristics and functions related to outcome research are discussed in detail. Considerations and recommendations for using the MCMI with substance users are provided for each major topic area. Newbern, D., Dansereau, D. F., Czuchry, M., & Simpson, D. D. (2005). Node-link mapping in individual counseling: Treatment impact on clients with ADHD-related behaviors. Journal of Psychoactive Drugs, 37(1), 93-103. Abstract: Individual drug abuse counseling methods using different types of node-link mapping (a visual representation strategy) were investigated among clients in private methadone maintenance treatment. Standard counseling, enhanced counseling with “free form” maps, and enhanced counseling with both “free form” and “guide” maps were compared at 6 and 12 months of treatment among clients with low and high levels of behaviors related to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder ADHD. Findings replicate prior work suggesting the positive impact of using node-link mapping in individual counseling sessions, with particular benefits noted for clients with higher levels of ADHD-type problems. Abstract: This article reports on the results of a U.S.-Italy collaborative study of organizational functioning and its relationship to innovation implementation and systems change. It was part of a NIDA-funded grant to the Institute of Behavioral Research at Texas Christian University (TCU) for cross-cultural comparisons of the TCU Organizational Readiness for Change (ORC) instrument. The assessment was translated into Italian and administered to 405 staff of local health programs representing both public and private sectors in the Veneto Region of northern Italy. The findings indicate the psychometric properties of the ORC in the American and Italian programs examined are consistent, and organizational climate score profiles were remarkably similar. Comparisons between public and private programs in northern Italy revealed that staffs in the public sector reported more resources, including computer access and electronic communications. They also reported higher ratings for professional growth and adaptability, but lower levels on influence and cohesion than in private programs. Because evidence shows that the Italian version of the ORC is psychometrically acceptable, it enables cross-cultural applications in the study of organizational attributes related to innovations and effectiveness of services. Rowan-Szal, G. A., Bartholomew, N. G., Chatham, L. R., & Simpson D. D. (2005). A combined cognitive and behavioral intervention for cocaine-using methadone clients. Journal of Psychoactive Drugs, 37(1), 75-84. Abstract: The effectiveness of combining contingency management with a cocaine-specific relapse prevention counseling module was examined in a study of 61 cocaine-using methadone clients randomly assigned to participate in an 8-week intervention and 8-week follow-up period. Results suggest that contingency management with low-cost rewards for treatment compliance was significantly related to reductions in cocaine use and exposure to the counseling module was positively related to 6-month retention rates. Both interventions were associated with positive treatment gains with effects in different behavioral outcomes.
