27 October 2009 Poster Presentations are listed on the Feature Presentations Web page that IBR staff and students are presenting at the October 2009 (28th-30th) Addiction Health Services Research Annual Meeting in San Francisco. Besides the posters’ information, PDF files are provided to show the posters in letter-page size (8 1/2 by 11 inches). 11 September 2009 The IBR Web’s site guides for Contents and the Site Map are updated to reflect the most current topics and the site structure used to cover the subjects. 3 September 2009 TCU Short Forms have been added to update the TCU Short (ADC) Forms Web page (was the TCU ADC Forms page). These forms facilitate customized assessment planning for adaptive treatment applications. 21 August 2009 In our latest newsletter issue (Spring-Summer 2009 issue from Research Reports from IBR; PDF: 350 KB / 4 pages ; Tables, PDF: 22KB / 4 pages), Dwayne Simpson, Norma Bartholomew, and Donald Dansereau summarize ratings by trainees on factors representing “readiness for change” and their evaluations of our IBR Summer Mapping Training conducted in July. 06 May 2009 The Manuals Section of the IBR site now provides a Web page of description for each manual, including a page for each “topic-focused modular application (TMA).” Links are updated throughout. Six of the TMAs now include a special version for criminal justice populations and a new manual entitled Mapping Your Reentry Plan is now available. Check out the updated Manuals Selection Matrix (PDF: 154 KB / 3 pages) for the current list of manuals, with a link to each available manual, its description, and PDF download. 24 April 2009 Don Dansereau and Norma Bartholomew will conduct training for TCU Mapping-Enhanced Counseling (TMEC) July 14-16 on the TCU campus in Fort Worth. Download the training information/registration form (PDF: 436 KB / 3 pages) for details. 04 March 2009 In our latest newsletter issue (Winter 2008-2009 issue from Research Reports from IBR; PDF: 252 KB / 4 pages), Drs. Donald Dansereau and Dwayne Simpson summarize TCU Mapping-Enhanced Counseling in “A Quick Guide to TCU Mapping.” This newsletter issue covers the application guides, research findings, and free downloadable manuals for those wishing to learn more about using TCU Mapping. 26 February 2008 IBR’s Annual Report is ready for downloading as an online PDF file. The report is a summary of IBR research activities for 2008 and targets Web links to additional research reports in the IBR Web site. (Downloading information) 6 January 2009 This IBR technical report (PDF: 143K / 6 pages) highlights the “Strategic Treatment Planning” (RAP) seminar being offered for small groups of program planners and innovation leaders gathered in regional settings. It includes a hands-on and interactive review of how TCU resources “fit together” and can be implemented to meet customized program needs. 19 December 2008 The Manuals Selection Matrix (PDF: 144KB / 3 pages) provides information for helping site visitors pick the TCU Manuals appropriate for their substance abuse treatment needs. In the matrix, the manuals are categorized by TCU Treatment Stage, focal topics, specific populations, and counseling needs. The matrix is available throughout the Manuals Section and has embedded links to manual descriptions and download links. Please Note: Important terminology change In the Manuals section of this Website, the “Brief Interventions” are now called topic-focused modular applications. 12 December 2008 In our latest newsletter issue (Fall 2008 from Research Reports from IBR; PDF: 102 KB / 4 pages), Drs. Dwayne Simpson and Pat Flynn expand on “Using Client Assessments.” This newsletter covers newly developed forms in the TCU ADC Forms set. Additional discussions include selecting “sets” of forms, and detailing clinical guidelines for using the assessments. 14 November 2008 A revised set of TCU ADC Forms have been adapted for use in single-page optical scanning applications. 6 November 2008 This new IBR technical report (PDF: 358K / 8 pages) provides an overview of needs and objectives envisioned by the Texas Research Center and its team of Criminal Justice Collaborators participating in the national Criminal Justice Drug Abuse Treatment Studies (CJ-DATS). Funding is from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). 3 October 2008 Two new manuals are available to download from IBR’s growing list of TCU Treatment Manuals. These manuals are Mapping-Enhanced Counseling: An Introduction and Using Client Assessments to Plan and Monitor Treatment (sometimes called the Using CEST Guide). Both manuals were developed by IBR research scientists to provide targeted materials designed particularly for counselors and group facilitators working in substance abuse treatment programs. 3 September 2008 CJ-DATS Collaborators Meeting at TCU (Aug 27) included presentations by Simpson and by Bartholomew requested by many of the 40 participants from 10 states and major service provider systems. 10 July 2008 In our latest newsletter issue (Summer 2008 from Research Reports from IBR; PDF: 422 KB / 4 pages), Dr. Dwayne Simpson addresses the five basic questions of treatment. “Revisiting the basics of treatment” reviews the fundamentals of effective substance abuse treatment within the conceptual framework of the TCU Treatment Model. This new issue includes 4 figures and offers more detailed descriptions of the linkages between TCU evidence-based assessments and interventions. 29 May 2008 IBR Director, Dr. Dwayne Simpson presents “Evidence-Based Frameworks for Planning Innovations and Field Implementation” at the June 2008 NIDA Blending Conference in Cincinnati, OH. (Downloading information) 15-16 October 2007 Dr. Dwayne Simpson, IBR Director, delivered an invited paper, Organizational readiness for stage-based dynamics of innovation implementation, at the Stockholm Conference on Implementation & Translational Research (October 15-16), sponsored by the IMS/Swedish National Institute of Public Health, Stockholm, Sweden. [Paper’s Abstract] [Handouts: PDF; 175KB; 6 pages, 2 slides per page] 29 August 2007 Special journal issues from Criminal Justice and Behavior and the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment have arrived from the publishers. Drs. Dwayne Simpson and Kevin Knight are guest editors for the CJB September 2007 issue with articles on “Offender Needs and Functioning Assessments.” Dr. Simpson also serves as guest editor with Dr. Pat Flynn for the September 2007 special issue of JSAT, which focuses a series of articles on “Organizational Readiness for Change.” 17 July 2007 Our latest newsletter (Research Reports from IBR) is the Winter issue that just came belatedly in from the cold. It focuses on pearls and perils of “research and practice collaborations”—mainly from a service provider perspective. More attention spent on staff preparations and expectations about research participation probably can improve progress in the global push toward adopting “evidence-based practices.” 27 June 2007 Dr. Dwayne Simpson, IBR Director, shares “Advice for New Visitors” who are seeking addiction treatment resources at our IBR Website. Over 400 downloadable resources files are available and his advice offers expert guidance to help researchers, clinicians, and program administrators find materials they need. 05 June 2007 The Brief Intervention collection of manuals now includes a new entry, "Mapping Your Treatment Plan: A Collaborative Approach," a mapping-focused guide for working with clients to establish meaningful and useful treatment goals. Evidence Section 28 February 2007 IBR researchers have now updated IBR's quarterly newsletter, Research Reports from IBR, replacing the Research Roundup newsletter of many years. The first two issues of Research Reports feature special journal issues. The Spring-Summer 2006 issue (PDF: 202KB / 4 pages) highlights the articles now published from Criminal Justice and Behavior. (Downloading information) 19 December 2006 The Birmingham Treatment Effectiveness Initiative (BTEI) has published its first issue of the project's newsletter (PDF: 2 MG / 4 pages). This issue includes information on the Birmingham, England project and their collaboration with IBR at TCU. Features are an article written by IBR Director Dr. Dwayne Simpson on "How Treatment Works," and a project timetable illustration based on a TCU model. Brief Interventions from the TCU Treatment System provide targeted materials designed particularly for counselors and group facilitators working in substance abuse treatment programs. 5 May 2006 Team Awareness Small Business is a 4-hour team-based training program for workplace substance abuse prevention that integrates team building exercises with peer referral and stress management skills. Understanding the time constraints of small businesses, the training was modified from the original 8-hour program, Team Awareness: Drugs in the Workplace. 30 March 2006 The Brief Interventions collection of manuals now includes "Contingency Management Strategies and Ideas." Through these projects, we continue to work in the "real world" with staff at hundreds of community-based and correctional drug treatment programs located throughout the U.S. and abroad (PDF: 131KB / 6 pages) 23 September 2005 Brief Interventions from the TCU Treatment System include a series of targeted materials designed particularly for counselors and group facilitators working in substance abuse treatment programs. The collection of manuals contains focused, easily accessible, and brief strategies for engaging clients in discussions and activities on important recovery topics (social networks, anger, mapping). 27 July 2005 Manuals covering 12-Step guide maps, HIV/AIDS education during drug treatment, and workplace substance abuse prevention can be downloaded now from this site. Check out the Manuals Section for details on all the manuals available. 11 July 2005 The Research Roundup Spring-Summer 2005 issue describes IBR's collaboration with England's National Treatment Agency (NTA) for Substance Misuse. Articles include: "Technology Transfer Across the Pond" and "Building Bridges of Treatment Effectiveness." 23 June 2005 An integrative overview (PDF: 207 KB / 6 pages) of TCU assessment and intervention resources for clinical and program management applications is now available.
